PFL76 Returns to Wide Shut Records with “The Fringe”
Montréal producer PFL76 returns to Wide Shut Records with “The Fringe,” a stripped-back techno record built around hypnotic rhythm, carefully controlled space and evolving textures.
Known for a sound that sits between minimal techno and more futuristic electronic territory, PFL76 brings a technical background to his productions. Before focusing on his own artist project, he spent more than 25 years working as an audio engineer across Montréal studios. An experience that can be heard in the precision and restraint of his music.
Minimal Elements, Constant Movement
“The Fringe” avoids an overloaded arrangement. Instead, the track develops through pulses, percussion, frequencies and textures that gradually interact with one another.
The groove stays physical while smaller changes in rhythm and space keep the track moving. Elements overlap, disappear and return in altered forms, creating tension without relying on oversized drops or obvious transitions.
It is a production style closely aligned with PFL76’s wider catalogue: deep rhythms, hypnotic repetition and detailed sound design, with every element given a clear purpose.
The Idea Behind “The Fringe”
The track takes its conceptual starting point from the double-slit experiment in physics.
In simple terms, when waves pass through two openings, they interact and create an interference pattern of bright and dark bands — known as fringes. PFL76 uses that idea less as a scientific explanation and more as a framework for the arrangement: individual sounds crossing, reinforcing and sometimes cancelling each other to create something larger than the individual parts.
That concept gives the record some intellectual depth, but “The Fringe” remains firmly designed for the club. The science stays in the background; the groove does the work.
PFL76 and Wide Shut Records
PFL76 co-founded Wide Shut Records with multidisciplinary artist Gabey in Montréal earlier this year. The label launched with their collaborative track “Clockwork,” followed by “Falling For You” and Gabey’s solo release “Indulge In.”
